« During the years in school my parents always kept on hearing the teachers telling the same thing: « Anton doesn’t seem to be completely incapable, but he´s constantly looking through the window, he´s never really present ».

I took my education for granted, I did not pay much attention.
To interpret and work with the 26th declaration of human rights has been a true awakening. I understand today that schools and the right to proper education can for some be a life saviour. Something that a few, regardless if they are born in Bagnolet, Rinkeby or elsewhere, would not change for anything. It´s a platform that they are ready to defend “with their bare hands”.

My girlfriend works in a psychiatry, emergency, for children under 18 years old. One of her “clients”, a 16 year old girl, jumped from the 6th floor trying to commit suicide. She’s traumatized from being sold to different men by her father to cover his drug abuse. As well from being hit daily by both her father and her mother and a hammer. Just before jumping she went to the teachers in her school, telling them that she didn’t feel well and that she needed help, that she was starting to hear voices in her head. They didn’t take her seriously, they did not respond.

It´s complex being a child, a student and a teacher. Many times raised in different realities, cultures and societies. The school with its main purpose to educate has become more than just an authority for education today, its an agency with a lot of responsibility. Maybe with more responsibility than we as a society can demand …

« Combien de fois mes parents, tout au long de ma scolarité, ont entendu mes professeurs leur dire : « Anton n’est pas complètement perdu, mais il regarde toujours par la fenêtre, il n’est jamais vraiment attentif. »

Je n’ai jamais mesuré l’importance de mon éducation. Travailler sur l’article 26 de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme a agi sur moi comme une réelle prise de conscience. J’ai compris aujourd’hui que l’école et l’accès à l’éducation peuvent sauver la vie. Qu’ils soient nés à Bagnolet, à Rinkeby ou ailleurs, certains enfants sont prêts à se battre à mains nues pour défendre ce droit à s’instruire.

Mon épouse travaille dans un service d’urgence psychiatrique pour les enfants de moins de 18 ans. Une de ses patientes, une jeune fille de 16 ans, a tenté de se suicider en se jetant du 6e étage. Elle est gravement traumatisée, car son père l’a vend sexuellement à des hommes afin de couvrir ses dépenses de drogue. Elle est également frappée régulièrement, par son père et sa mère, avec un marteau. Avant cette tentative de suicide, elle s’était rendue à l’école pour parler à ses professeurs. Leur dire qu’elle avait besoin d’aide, qu’elle commençait à entendre des voix dans sa tête. Ils ne l’ont pas prise au sérieux. Ils n’ont rien fait.

C’est complexe d’être un enfant, d’être un étudiant, un professeur. Nous grandissons et nous vivons dans des réalités, des cultures différentes. Les responsabilités aujourd’hui de l’école, en tant qu’institution, dépassent celles de l’instruction. Peut-être que ces responsabilités sont aujourd’hui trop grandes …
